• AR CITY / MULTIDEVICE EXPERIENCE

AR CITY is Japan’s first use case of AR cloud application, and IT was originally developed as an iPad experience. The key feature of AR CITY is simultaneous AR experience of multiple users. This functionality caught attention from companies and event organizers, and we decided to improve this functionality and re-develop AR City as a cross-device AR experience. The implementation of cross-device functionality in AR City helped us broaden and deepen our knowledge of bridging multiple AR platforms and devices. ALSO, this led to the development of CONEKTON, MESON’s own AR framework.

  • Importance of multi-device support in AR experience

AR CITY, which was originally developed as an iPad experience, was reborn as a cross-platform experience especially for Nreal
Light and Magic Leap1. Currently, there is no industrial standard for AR app development. We believe it is important to switch
    development platforms based on requirements.

  • Challenge for implementing cross-platform functionality

Implementation of cross-platform functionality was challenging especially because of the system differences between AR apps for mobile devices and AR glasses. The most serious difference is UI and UX. Although a screen of mobile devices is a helpful interface not just for users but for developers, AR glasses do not have a screen and use space as an interface instead. The design and development of spatial interaction required for AR glasses were big challenges.

  • Birth of Conekton

In addition to the difference in UI and UX, we had to handle the difference in SDK used for each AR device. We re-developed the system and functionalities of AR CITY to make it a cross-device app. The experience of developing the cross-device functionality became the birthplace of CONEKTON, MESON's development framework. CONEKTON is designed to handle differences between devices and develop a cross-device AR application effectively and efficiently. We use this framework in our projects to address demands for cross-device AR experiences.
