• MIRR / AR IN VR SOLUTION

mirr is originally an AR experience that transforms the area of Shibuya Cast into a virtual space for AR. However, the impact of COVID-19 made it difficult to continue to keep the original plan of the mirr project. As a solution for the situation, we had decided to use the AR in VR prototyping method, which is a technique to generate a virtual space based on scan data of reality and test AR prototypes in the VR environment. This allows us to develop AR/VR experiences without visiting actual places. Using MESON’s AR development framework CONEKTON in the mirr project, we have proved the efficacy of the AR in VR prototyping method.

  • AR IN VR PROTOTYPING

The AR in VR prototyping method is a technique to generate a virtual space based on scan data of reality and test AR prototypes in the VR environment. We have developed a variety of AR experiences and proposed solutions for troubles in development. One of the solution methods we have developed and used is aprototyping technique creating an AR experience in a VR world, which we call AR in VR prototyping. The recent development of photogrammetry and other approaches to scanning the real world help us to collect and use real-world 3D mapping data. The AR in VR prototyping method supported by the 3D mapping techniques is a creative solution for developing AR experiences without visiting a real location.

  • CREATION OF VIRTUAL Virtual SHIBUYA CAST

The development of mirr had faced difficulty of the impact of COVID-19 and the coronavirus emergency declaration of the Japanese government. As a solution for this hazardous situation, we had decided to apply the AR in VR prototyping method in the project. Using the CAD and point cloud data of Shibuya Cast, we developed a realistic 3D model of the building in the VR world. The hybrid use of the two types of the spatial data substituted each other and enhanced the immersiveness of the AR in VR experience.

  • CONEKTON AND SUCCESS OF AR IN VR

While the team collaboration in the mirr project was severely limited under the circumstance of COVID-19, MESON’s multi-device development framework CONEKTON played an important role in dealing with the shift from the AR project to VR and accelerating the speed of content development. Because we had developed mirr based on CONEKTON since the beginning of the project, we were able to smoothly switch the development platforms between AR and VR.
Throughout the project, we developed the entire parts of mirr for VR and switched the platform to AR just before the end of the project. CONEKTON allows us to develop cross-device apps on a single framework. The success of the mirr project led us to change how we develop AR/VR apps.
